The therapeutic dose of Proventil has a pronounced stimulating effect on the beta 2-adrenoreceptors of the surface of the bronchi, on the unstriated muscles of the uterus and blood vessels. The drug prevents the release of biologically active substances from mast cells for a long time. It helps to increase the vital capacity of the lungs, prevents the development of bronchial spasms, and if they are present, it stops them quickly. It eliminates resistance in the lumen of the respiratory tract and suppresses the reactivity of the bronchi.
Proventil action
Taking Proventil improves the process of sputum discharge, activates the work of cells of the scintillating epithelium, prevents the formation of bronchospasm of allergic origin. In some cases, it affects the production of insulin and cleavage of glycogen, reduces the level of potassium concentration in the plasma. In patients with bronchial asthma, it often provokes an increase of glucose in the blood and accelerates the breakdown of lipids (this aspect is important in diabetes).
When using the recommended therapeutic doses, it does not have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system, and blood pressure does not increase. The drug causes a slight expansion of the coronary vessels of the heart.
Under the influence of Salbutamol, the coronary arteries of the heart expand, the reactivity of the bronchi is suppressed, and resistance in the respiratory tract decreases. Sputum is removed from the respiratory tract, and the activity of mucus production decreases.
The drug does not cause a decrease in blood pressure and does not have an unnecessarily traumatic effect on the heart, unlike other drugs with similar properties.
Proventil indications
Proventil, in the form of an aerosol, begins to act a few minutes after application. The maximum effectiveness of taking the drug is achieved in about 30 minutes and remains for another hour.
Only a small part of the active component enters the respiratory tract. Its absorption is carried out in the lungs, after which the substance enters the bloodstream.
The main part of the dose settles in the oropharynx and is swallowed. The substance is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Metabolism, with the formation of inactive products, is carried out in the liver. Excretion occurs through the kidneys together with urine.
Taking Proventil unnecessarily can lead to adverse consequences, so it is permissible to use the drug only when prescribed by a doctor.
The main conditions for which you should use an inhaler are:
1. Obstructive syndrome. The drug is necessary for the short-term expansion of the bronchi and getting rid of shortness of breath.
2. Asthma of allergic origin. Thanks to the remedy, it is possible to eliminate bronchospasm and weaken the body's reaction to the stimulus.
3. Bronchitis of chronic type. During chronic bronchitis, there is an inflammatory process in the respiratory tract, which leads to the formation of mucus. The use of Proventil helps to remove it and expand the lumen in the bronchi.
4. Asthmatic bronchitis. The drug helps to get rid of suffocation and reduces the reaction to the stimulus.
5. Emphysema of the lungs. Salbutamol is able to increase the vital capacity of the organ, which facilitates the breathing process.
Children are recommended to use this drug to combat obstructive bronchial syndrome.
However, the main indication for the use of Proventil is bronchial asthma. It is often used in combination with glucocorticosteroids.
The drug can be used for preventive purposes. It helps prevent attacks of suffocation caused by narrowing of the lumen in the bronchi.
The therapeutic effect occurs in the first minutes of the application. The maximum time to achieve the effect is 30-60 minutes, the duration of action is up to three hours. Taking the drug in pills contributes to a more prolonged action (up to 6-8 hours), but the therapeutic effect occurs no earlier than 30 minutes.
- Prevention of possible complications in the form of bronchospasm and its relief in any form of bronchial asthma.
- Obstructive processes (blockage or narrowing of the lumen of the bronchi) of a reversible nature in the respiratory tract in emphysema of the lungs and chronic bronchitis.
- Broncho-obstructive syndrome in childhood.
Preterm birth that threatens the life of the fetus, with the increased contractile function of the uterus, labor activity up to the 37th week of pregnancy, fetal bradycardia at different stages of the birth process, and cervical insufficiency are also direct indications for the use of Proventil. It can be used for the prevention of uterine surgery for pregnant women.
Common use
Proventil is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs.
Proventil is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Dosage and direction
Use Proventil exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Precautions
When using the inhaler device for the first time, prime it by spraying 4 test sprays into the air, away from your face. Shake well before priming. Also prime the inhaler if you have not used it for 2 weeks or longer, or if you have dropped the inhaler.
Contraindications
You should not use Proventil if you are allergic to salbutamol.
If you have certain conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use this medication. Before using Proventil, tell your doctor if you have:
heart disease, high blood pressure, or congestive heart failure;
a heart rhythm disorder;
a seizure disorder such as epilepsy;
diabetes; or
overactive thyroid.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether salbutamol passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.
Possible side effects
Stop using Proventil and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
bronchospasm (wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing), especially after starting a new canister of this medicine;
chest pain and fast, pounding, or uneven heart beats;
tremor, nervousness;
low potassium (confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling); or
dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).
Less serious Proventil side effects may include:
headache, dizziness, nervousness;
sleep problems (insomnia);
cough, hoarseness, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose;
dry mouth and throat;
muscle pain; or
diarrhea.
Drug interaction
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
a diuretic (water pill);
digoxin (digitalis, Lanoxin);
a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), propranolol (Inderal), and others;
an antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Etrafon), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Janimine, Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), and others;
an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate); or
other bronchodilators such as levalbuterol (Xopenex), bitolterol (Tornalate), pirbuterol (Maxair), terbutaline (Brethine, Bricanyl), salmeterol (Serevent), isoetherine (Bronkometer), metaproterenol (Alupent, Metaprel), or isoproterenol (Isuprel Mistometer).
Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors.
Missed dose
Use the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. An overdose of salbutamol can be fatal. Overdose symptoms may include nervousness, headache, tremor, dry mouth, chest pain or heavy feeling, rapid or uneven heart rate, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, dizziness, seizure (convulsions), feeling light-headed or fainting.
Storage
Store Proventil at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Extreme heat can cause the medicine canister to burst. Do not store it in your car on hot days. Do not throw an empty canister into open flame.
