Is it possible to remove an acute attack of asthma for 120 seconds? The inhalations, characterized by rapid action, will help to stop such conditions. Relief will occur within the first 5 minutes after use. The effect will last for several hours, and the drug itself will completely leave the body in 72 hours. Partial half-life is carried out after 4-6 hours from the moment of application.
Proair Inhaler is a drug that opens the medium and large airways in the lungs. It is used to treat asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also be used to treat high blood potassium levels. It is usually used as an inhaler or nebulizer but is also available as drugs and solution for intravenous administration. The effect usually occurs within 15 minutes and lasts for 2-6 hours.
Salbutamol was developed in 1967 in the UK. It is included in the world health organization's list of essential drugs, a list of the most important drugs needed in a basic health system.
As a β2 agonist, Salbutamol is also used in gynecology. An intravenous drug can be used as a tocolytic to relax the smooth muscles of the uterus and delay premature birth. Although it is preferable to atosiban and ritodrine, it has mostly been replaced by the calcium channel blocker nifedipine, which is more effective, better tolerated, and administered orally. Salbutamol has been used to treat acute hyperkalemia, as it stimulates the flow of potassium into cells, thus lowering its level in the blood.
Description of the drug
Proair Inhaler is a bronchodilating drug that has a tocolytic and bronchodilating effect. It is part of the group of beta 2-adrenomimetics.
The drug relieves symptoms of the bronchospastic syndrome, helps reduce the tone of the respiratory muscles during a spasm, prevents the penetration of histamine into the extracellular space. It helps to take a deep breath by increasing the volume of the lungs, expands the coronary arteries of the heart, helps to get rid of sputum, reduces the concentration of potassium, insulin production.
Proair Inhaler is indicated for the relief and prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and reversible airway obstruction.
Proair Inhaler can be used before possible contact with an allergen or physical activity to prevent the development of an asthmatic attack.
Proair Inhaler is used in the form of inhalations. Adult patients are indicated to use 100 micrograms (1 inhalation) to relieve bronchospasm. If necessary, the dose of Salbutamol can be increased to 200 mcg (2 inhalations). The maximum recommended dose of Salbutamol is 2 inhalations 3-4 times/day.
It is also possible to develop paradoxical bronchospasm. In this case, you need to cancel the drug Proair Inhaler and conduct alternative treatment.
When using Proair Inhaler, local reactions may occur in the form of irritation of the oral mucosa and pharynx.
Drug contraindications
Proair Inhaler is contraindicated to children under four years of age in case of hypersensitivity to this drug.
Salbutamol can be used by pregnant women for life-saving reasons.
During breastfeeding, Salbutamol can only be used when the expected positive effect for the mother significantly exceeds the potential threat to the child.
Side effects and contraindications
While taking Proair Inhaler, problems may occur with the cardiovascular, genitourinary, immune, musculoskeletal, and central nervous systems. There may be pathological manifestations of various types on the skin.
Common use
Proair Inhaler is a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. Its therapeutic doses interact with β2-adrenergic receptors in muscles of the bronchi. After inhalation of 10-20% of the administered dose reaches the lower respiratory tract. The medication starts to act 4-5 minutes after inhalation and does for 4-6 hours. Proair Inhaler is used to relief symptoms of asthma, to treat patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis.
Dosage and direction
Do not use the medication more frequently than recommended. Common initial dose for inhalation is 2.5 mg, which later could be increased up to 5 mg. The solution for inhalations must be protected from microbial contamination which could spread to the patient's mucous. Use proper aseptic techniques each time you open the bottle. Avoid any contact of the dropper tip of the bottle with any surface. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
Precautions
If you noticed that the medication does not help or your symptoms worsened you should check up with your doctor. Intake of other inhaled drugs and asthma medications should be done only by recommendations of your doctor. Inform your doctor about all allergic reactions you had in history and also about diabetes, heart or blood vessel disease, heart rhythm problems, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, seizure disorders.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the medication or its components in history.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects are: shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet, trembling or shaking of the hands or feet. More rare side effects include fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse palpitations, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and tremor or nervousness.
Drug interactions
Proair Inhaler cannot be co-administered with other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or used with cautiousness to avoid deleterious cardiovascular effects. Simultaneous use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants is contraindicated. Their intake should be administered 2 weeks later after treatment with Proair Inhaler is finished. Beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agents are able to produce severe bronchospasm in patients with asthma and interact block the pulmonary effect of beta-agonists (Proair Inhaler). Beta-agonists worsen hypokalemia caused by nonpotassium-sparing diuretics (such as loop or thiazide diuretics). Proair Inhaler decreases serum levels of digoxin.
Missed dose
If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose. Take your doses at about the same time each day to avoid missing a dose.
Overdose
Transitory changes induced by β2-adrenergic receptor agonists such as tachicardia, tremor, headache are symptoms of overdose. Severe hypopotassemia appears as result of Proair Inhaler overdose.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from moisture, sunlight, kids and pets in a tight container.
