Zocitab is a prescription medication containing sertraline hydrochloride, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) specifically formulated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental well-being. Clinical studies demonstrate its efficacy in improving mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level, while reducing anxiety and fear. Proper diagnosis and ongoing medical supervision are essential for safe and effective use.

Common use
Zocitab is primarily indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. It may also be prescribed off-label for panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), following a comprehensive psychiatric assessment.
Dosage and direction
The recommended starting dosage for Zocitab is 50 mg administered orally once daily, either in the morning or evening, with or without food. Dosage may be adjusted at intervals of no less than one week, based on therapeutic response and tolerability, up to a maximum of 200 mg daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed or crushed. Dosage adjustments are necessary in patients with hepatic impairment.
Precautions
- Monitor for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior, especially during initial months of therapy or dose changes
- Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures
- May cause hyponatremia; monitor serum sodium in at-risk patients
- Discontinuation syndrome may occur; taper dose when stopping treatment
- Inform healthcare provider of any upcoming surgical procedures
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefits justify potential risks
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sertraline or any component of the formulation
- Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy
- Use of pimozide
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, increased sweating, and sexual dysfunction. Less frequently, tremor, palpitations, decreased appetite, and blurred vision may occur. Serious side effects include serotonin syndrome, abnormal bleeding, angle-closure glaucoma, and manic episodes. Report any persistent or severe symptoms to a healthcare provider immediately.
Drug interaction
- MAOIs: Risk of serious, sometimes fatal, reactions including serotonin syndrome
- NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin: Increased risk of bleeding
- Drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants, flecainide, propafenone): May require dosage adjustment
- Lithium, tramadol, St. John’s Wort: Increased risk of serotonin syndrome
- Diazepam, tolbutamide: Sertraline may inhibit metabolism
- Drugs highly bound to plasma protein: Potential for displacement
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Maintain regular dosing schedule to ensure stable serum concentrations.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include serotonin syndrome, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, tremor, agitation, and dilated pupils. There is no specific antidote; provide supportive care and symptomatic treatment. Gastric lavage with activated charcoal may be considered if presented early. Contact a poison control center or emergency department immediately.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature 20°–25°C (68°–77°F). Excursions permitted to 15°–30°C (59°–86°F). Keep in original container, tightly closed, and protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of unused medication properly according to local guidelines.
