Rhinocort (budesonide) is a clinically proven, corticosteroid nasal spray designed to provide long-term control of nasal allergy symptoms. It works directly at the site of inflammation, reducing swelling, congestion, and irritation caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Trusted by healthcare professionals, Rhinocort offers a non-drowsy, targeted approach to managing seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, helping restore comfortable breathing and improved quality of life.
Features
- Contains budesonide, a potent anti-inflammatory corticosteroid
- Alcohol-free, aqueous suspension for reduced nasal irritation
- Delivers 32 mcg of budesonide per actuation
- Designed with a precise, metered-dose pump for consistent delivery
- Available in 8.6 g and 17 g canister sizes
- Preservative-free formula suitable for long-term use
- Compatible with most nasal adapter tips for user comfort
Benefits
- Provides significant reduction in nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose
- Minimizes systemic absorption due to localized action
- Non-sedating formula allows for unimpaired daytime function
- Prevents recurrence of symptoms with regular use
- Improves overall nasal airflow and sinus comfort
- Suitable for adults and children ages 6 years and older
Common use
Rhinocort is primarily indicated for the management of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and pruritus. It is effective for both seasonal allergies (e.g., hay fever) and perennial allergies triggered by indoor allergens. Some clinicians also recommend its off-label use for mild-to-moderate nasal polyps and non-allergic rhinitis, though such use should be physician-supervised.
Dosage and direction
For adults and children 12 years and older: 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. For maintenance, 1 spray in each nostril once daily may be sufficient.
For children 6–11 years: 1 spray in each nostril once daily.
Shake well before use. Prime the pump before first use or if not used for 2 or more days by releasing 5 test sprays into the air. Gently blow nose before use. Tilt head slightly forward and insert tip into nostril, pointing away from the nasal septum. Breathe in gently while spraying. Avoid blowing nose for 15 minutes after application.
Precautions
- Not for use in infections or untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral nasal conditions
- Use with caution in patients with tuberculosis, ocular herpes simplex, or recent nasal surgery or injury
- May cause nasal dryness, irritation, or light epistaxis; use a saline spray if dryness occurs
- Systemic effects are rare but possible with long-term high doses
- Monitor for signs of adrenal suppression in prolonged use
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed; consult healthcare provider
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to budesonide or any component of the formulation
- Active or quiescent untreated respiratory tuberculosis
- Untreated localized nasal infections
Possible side effects
Common:
- Mild nasal irritation
- Dryness
- Sneezing
- Epistaxis (nosebleeds)
- Pharyngitis
Less common:
- Headache
- Cough
- Nasal septum perforation (rare, with prolonged misuse)
- Glaucoma or cataracts (with long-term, high-dose use)
Drug interaction
No significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions have been reported. However, caution is advised when used concomitantly with other corticosteroids (oral or inhaled) due to potential additive systemic effects. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase budesonide plasma concentrations.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, use it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to low systemic bioavailability. Excessive long-term use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects such as hypercortisolism or adrenal suppression. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Do not freeze. Keep the canister upright. Discard after 120 sprays or 6 months after opening, whichever comes first. Keep out of reach of children.
