Podowart: Clinically Proven Topical Treatment for Warts

Podowart is a physician-formulated topical solution designed for the targeted treatment of common warts, plantar warts, and other benign epithelial growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Its active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, is derived from natural sources and works through a cytostatic mechanism that inhibits viral replication and induces localized tissue necrosis in affected areas. This prescription-strength treatment offers a precise, office-grade approach to wart management that can be administered in the comfort of the patient’s home under medical guidance. Clinically validated for efficacy and safety, Podowart provides a reliable alternative to cryotherapy or surgical removal for suitable candidates.

Features

  • Contains 0.5% podophyllotoxin as the active pharmaceutical ingredient
  • Alcohol-based solution for enhanced penetration and rapid drying
  • Precision applicator tip for targeted delivery and reduced risk of surrounding tissue damage
  • Prescription-only formulation ensuring supervised use
  • Stable chemical composition with a shelf life of 24 months unopened
  • Packaged in amber glass bottle to protect from light degradation

Benefits

  • Effectively destroys wart tissue through selective cytotoxic action
  • Reduces recurrence by targeting HPV-infected cells
  • Minimizes scarring compared to ablative procedures
  • Allows self-application after proper medical instruction
  • Cost-effective alternative to repeated clinical procedures
  • Provides visible results within 2–4 weeks of compliant use

Common use

Podowart is indicated for the treatment of external genital warts (condylomata acuminata), particularly smaller, non-keratinized lesions in moist areas. It is also used off-label for common warts (verruca vulgaris) and plantar warts under dermatological supervision. The solution is specifically formulated for cutaneous application and should never be used on mucosal surfaces without explicit medical direction. Ideal candidates are immunocompetent adults with limited, accessible lesions who can follow precise application protocols.

Dosage and direction

Apply twice daily (morning and evening) for 3 consecutive days, followed by a 4-day treatment-free interval. This cycle may be repeated for up to 4 weeks or until clearance occurs. Using the supplied applicator, apply a minimal amount of solution sufficient to cover the wart surface without spreading to surrounding healthy skin. Allow the solution to dry completely before allowing skin-to-skin contact or covering with clothing. Wash hands thoroughly immediately after application. Maximum weekly dosage should not exceed 0.5ml.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and open wounds.
  • Do not apply to bleeding, irritated, or inflamed skin.
  • Use sunscreen on treated areas during therapy as photosensitivity may occur.
  • Sexual contact should be avoided while the solution is on the skin.
  • Not recommended for use on facial warts or large treatment areas (>10cm²).
  • Diabetic patients and those with circulatory disorders should use with extreme caution.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to podophyllotoxin or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy, lactation, or women attempting conception
  • Patients under 12 years of age
  • Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy patients)
  • Application to pigmented lesions or lesions of uncertain diagnosis
  • Patients with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulant therapy

Possible side effects

  • Local reactions: erythema (90%), burning sensation (75%), itching (60%)
  • Erosion or ulceration at application site (25%)
  • Pain or tenderness (30%)
  • Dryness and scaling (40%)
  • Rarely: systemic effects including nausea, vomiting, or peripheral neuropathy with excessive application
  • Contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals (5%)

Drug interaction

No known pharmacokinetic interactions. However, concomitant use with other topical agents (especially keratolytics, acids, or retinoids) may increase skin irritation. Patients using immunosuppressive therapies may experience reduced efficacy. Consult physician before using with any other dermatological preparation.

Missed dose

Apply as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next scheduled application. Do not double apply to compensate for a missed dose. Resume regular dosing schedule. Extended treatment intervals may reduce efficacy—consult prescribing physician if multiple doses are missed.

Overdose

Excessive application may lead to systemic absorption with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, CNS effects, bone marrow suppression, or renal damage. In case of accidental ingestion or widespread application, seek immediate medical attention. Topical overdose should be treated by thorough washing with soap and water and symptomatic management.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Keep bottle tightly closed and upright. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard 3 months after first opening. Do not transfer to other containers.

Disclaimer

This product requires a prescription and should be used only under medical supervision. Individual results may vary. Proper diagnosis by a healthcare professional is essential before initiation of therapy. Not all warts respond to topical treatment—surgical options may be necessary for resistant cases. Full prescribing information available upon request.
